ABSTRACT

The broad objective of this study is to examine Hepatitis B (HBV) Serological Markers Relationship with VitB12 Deficiency using University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Delta State University Teaching Hospital as case study. Survey research design was adopted for the study and with the aid of convenient sampling method, the researcher selected two hundred and twenty (220) participant who Hepatitis B patient in Hepatitis Ward at  University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Delta State University Teaching Hospital as the respondent of the study. Well structured questionnaire was issued to the 80 respondent of which total of 200 responses were retrieved  and validated for the study. Data was analyzed in frequencies and tables using  simple percentage, mean and standard deviation. Hypothesis test was  conducted using Pearson Correlation statistical tool(SPSS v.23). Findings from the study reveals that there is a relationship between There is a relationship between between hepatitis b (HBV) serological markers relationship with vitB12 deficiency. This show that Hepatitis  B  virus  infection  and PIFN/RBV led to the decline of B vitamins including vitamin B1, B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid.  it  has  been  documented  that  B  vitamins  could  exhibit  antioxidant  activity  via scavenging oxygen radicals and organic radicals. Thus, the decrease in B vitamins diminished their antioxidant defense. On the other hand, the depletion of B12 vitamins also favored the occurrence of anemia in HbV patients with PIFN/RBV therapy. The study there recommends that there is need for  urgent intervention strategy for all stakeholders to brace-up to the challenge of embarking on massive vaccination against the Hepatitis B virus. More so, Broadcast media should continuously provide adequate understanding of the high-risk actions such as sexual activities and sharing of razor blades, syringes and tattooing needles that promote the disease spread hence this awareness will have a substantial influence on decreasing hepatitis mortality rate.
